The City of Pančevo is located in South Vojvodina, at the confluence of the Tamiš and the Danube rivers, at the very edge of the Pannonian Plain. Pančevo was first mentioned in 1153, as a trading town. In the 15th century, it was occupied by the Turks, and it remained under their occupation until 1716. Under the Austro-Hungarian rule the town was known as Čomva, and later Pančova, and the name Pančevo dates form 1918. Pančevo is the fourth largest city in Vojvodina by population. It is the economic, cultural and administrative center of South Banat and one of the most important industrial centers in the Republic of Serbia. Pančevo is just 18 km away from Belgrade and 40 km away from the Nikola Tesla International Airport. In the city, you can visit many religious buildings: Monastery Church of Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the Vojlovica Monastir, the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Anne, the Roman Catholic Church Saint Charles Borromeo, Serbian orthodox church Assumption of Holy Virgin. The first brewery in Serbia is located in Pančevo, it was in property of the family Vajfert. Pančevo is a city that can boast a big number of well-known people who were born or used to work there. Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, a poet, Mihajlo Pupin, a scientist, Uroš Predić, a painter, Isidora Sekulić, a writer, Olja Ivanjicki, Pal Dečov and Milenko Prvački, artists, Vasko Popa, a poet, and Ašhen Ataljanc, a ballet dancer.
